Are you bored of your headboard?

Headboards seem to have come back into fashion recently and it is a great way to update the look of your bed and bedroom. Here are a few fabulous ideas on how.

This gorgeous sea-inspired scheme comes alive with these old oars

This is a great way to recycle old frames, or a great excuse to hit an op shop for supplies. Take a colour from your favorite bedspread and paint your frames to match. Perhaps leave the glass in one and place a complimentary image into it such as a flower in a similar colour.

This is a beautiful way to convert and use an old fireplace. Inlaid with a mirror and 'shabbied', this gorgeous headboard is a lovely way to frame a bed - and even gives a little shelving space for a few special nicknacks.

Mirrors always make great headboards and, as they reflect light, they give a more spacious feeling to the room.

This is such an effective but simple idea! Next time you renovate or visit your local salvage yard look around for timber panels, doors or in fact anything that is the right width that can be easily converted. Cheap and Chic!

Memories

Though the days of digital media are well and truly here, I know most of us still have a few hundred old family photographs in a cupboard or album that generally only surface at major family events. I came across this terrific ideas page recently at www.ehow.com and thought to myself what underused pieces of art old photos make. Its time for us to blow off the dust, peel them apart and showcase these photos in our homes.

A Happy Accident

It's funny the unexpected places that life takes you. I stopped into a shop/cafe yesterday that I have been driving past for the last 7 years, finally deciding that a visit could not wait any longer. As I entered the store the most gorgeous image caught my eye - a beautiful postcard by an Australian artist, Chris Chun. I thought I had to share his talent with you all. You can find his Gallery at chrischun.com/paintings.

L.O.V.E

Love means something different to all of us. Romance, family, pets, hobbies, and for a lucky few of us, career.  I thought I would write and encourage you all to embrace the things you love and make sure you represent them in your home. Rather than leaving the debris of our lives to clutter our homes and become a source of frustration ("Put those toys away!"), choose some items that mean something to you and give them a special place. Re-invent them, make them into art and showcase them, or turn them into something useful. Its also a great way to recycle your old belongings and save money, and the planet, in the process.

If your favorite books have been read to death, consider giving them a new life. This fabulous lamp is an easy way to recycle your favorite reads. It will also be a great talking point as your guests discover more about you.

If your children's baby blankets still have a little life left in them, turn them into beautiful cushion covers to scatter over their bed as they grow older.

Colourful Creations

Well! What a week. After my first week of tertiary education I can say without doubt this is going to be FUN! Moving straight in to it, we began by taking a look at colours and how they relate to one another, and to us, and it got me thinking, what do certain colours mean to you? For some, blue represents the freshness of the ocean, whereas for others it creates a feeling of depression or unpleasant coldness. Red can mean both love and passion, but also danger. Because we all perceive colours differently, it is this that sets our home designs apart from one another. Embrace the colours that make you feel your best - and whether you like subtle or Statement!, here are some beautiful and colourful room designs to help inspire you to inject a little colour into your life!

My First Blog

Hello Everyone!

So tomorrow is the day I will begin the rest of my life; time for me to “wake up and smell the coffee” –  in more ways than one!

My name is Jess. It is tomorrow I will begin my journey as a budding interior designer and decorator and I hope that some of you will come along for the ride. After several attempts at careers that didn't quite fit, I finally realised that my devoted visits to Loot, Earthborn and Villa 9 each week (to name a few) meant that I could either express my creative passion by spending my entire salary on everything I saw (“Honey, it was a two for one sale!”) or I could just accept that this was what I was meant to do and go for it, spending all my time surrounded by and designing beautiful things and helping others find their bliss. Besides, I figure that at least this way I can say “but I have to buy that, it is for a design!”

As I come from an old fashioned family, I am used to jotting down things on a note pad but my second goal this year is to embrace the new way of the world and as a result I will be blogging my adventures from now on. The beauty of coming from such a family is that it has taught me to value things that have history, tradition and character as well as to embrace the new. So the position I find myself in is that I now love absolutely EVERYTHING!

So, let’s see. 'The Plan' (Cue dramatic music) is to start my interior design qualification tomorrow, blog my progress, inspiration, any vintage or new finds, and hopefully inspire you all to live in a space that makes you feel truly yourself. Our home should be a reflection of who we are – and though some of us are busy… or broke! I hope that I can bring to you some ways to easily, and cheaply make your house - a home.

I can’t wait to get started!
